Your ceramic braces represent a serious investment in improving the form and function of your mouth. While your braces are designed to be durable they can none-the-less be damaged by certain foods and lifestyle choices. If your braces are damaged, it will increase the amount of time you have to wear them.

Chewing gum and eating sticky or hard foods is one of the leading causes of damage to braces. Gum and Sticky foods can get stuck in and around your braces. This can bend wires loosen, bands, or cause the resin adhesive holding a bracket to come loose. You should also try to avoid crunchy foods and hard candy. This also extends to bad habits like chewing on hard objects like things like pencils, pens and ice.

The ceramic coating on your braces does not stain as easily as the enamel of your natural teeth. Enamel stains much faster. This is especially troublesome if you use tobacco products on a regular basis. Avoid using teeth whitening products as they won’t be able to affect the enamel under the brackets. This will lead to noticeable difference when your braces are removed.

Make sure to brush and floss at least twice a day. Your braces might have some hard to clean spots. Dental water jets, interdental brushes and floss threaders can help you clean these areas and maintain good oral health.
