To help you better understand orthodontic treatment, we are happy to provide the answers to the most popular orthodontic questions! We know orthodontics can be overwhelming and confusing at times, but there’s not need to be scared or frightened of aligning your smile. Orthodontic treatment is a great way to finally achieve the smile you are proud of, and we are here to help you! To start helping you feel better about the aligning treatment, we are happy to give you the answers to the following questions:
How long will I need to wear braces?
Each person is different when it comes to transforming their smile. Treatment can last 9 months to 5 years, but it is more common to have treatment that lasts about 18-24 months. The best way to know how long your treatment will last is to talk to your orthodontist during your next appointment.
Can I look cool with braces?
Yes, you can most definitely look cool with braces. Many people see brackets and wires as the jewels of the smile! You can also decorate your appliance with colorful rubber bands, which is the best part of the treatment.
Do braces cause pain?
Braces don’t necessarily hurt, but they do tend to cause some soreness, which is completely normal. The soreness means that the braces are doing their job, moving your teeth and transforming your smile. The soreness only lasts for a couple of days and can be relieved with over-the-counter pain medication. Your appliance may also cut your lips and cheeks from time to time, but that can be easily fixed with orthodontic wax. Just place the wax over the bracket or wire that is poking you and it will provide the comfort you need.
Can I still play sports while I have braces?
Braces will not affect your game in any way, so yes; you can still play sports while you have braces. While you do so, we strongly recommend wearing a mouth guard. The guard will protect your lips, teeth, cheeks, and appliance from being damaged when hard, forceful objects hit them.
What can I eat while I have braces?
Unfortunately, what you eat matters when you have braces. You need to care for your appliance as much as possible, and one of those ways is by avoiding hard-to-eat and sticky foods, like:
• Caramel apples
• Gummy bears
• Sticky or chunky peanut butter
• Soda or sugary drinks
Although we recommend avoiding these foods, you can eat some of them if you cut them into small pieces, like the apples, bagels, and hamburgers. If the food is chewy and sticky, we do not recommend eating it, even if it’s cut into small pieces.
