If you have an orthodontic retainer, then you need to do all you can to care for it regularly. If you keep your retainer in tip-top shape, it can keep your smile in tip-top shape. So, our orthodontists, Drs. Wiltshire, Brassington, and Bibona, encourage you to keep retainer care high on your to-do list. To help you clean and care for it, they are happy to share some tips with you. Those tips are:

-Rinse your retainer regularly: It’s best to rinse your retainer with water as soon as you take it out of the mouth. This can help you avoid plaque buildup on the appliance, which can, in turn, help you avoid cavities and gum disease.

-Deeply clean your retainer often: It’s best to deeply clean your retainer by brushing it with a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild dish soap or water. Avoid using toothpaste with abrasives or the retainer can get scratched. If necessary, you can use a denture brush or denture cleaner to clean your appliance.

-Keep your retainer in a safe place: A hot environment can warp and melt your appliance, so it’s best to keep it in a cooler room. It’s also important to keep the appliance away from a space where your dog can find it. For some reason, dogs love to chew retainers. As long as you keep the retainer in a safe place, you’ll be fine.
